EL RENO, Okla. – The top issues in the Canadian County Democrats’ poll at El Reno’s Burger Day on Sat, May 7, were public education with 18.3 percent of the vote and health care with 14.9 percent.

Participants voted throughout the day by dropping dried pinto beans into wood display known as the Bean Poll with 11 slots separated by Plexiglas.

“This is the ninth year that the we offered our bean poll to rank the issues on people’s minds,” Canadian County Democrats Secretary Shirley Burton said. “It’s free. It’s a conversation-starter, and people really like to be asked for their opinions.”

The third most popular issue was women’s reproductive health with 12.2 percent of the vote followed by veterans services with 9.5 percent.

Two issues tied for fifth place with 8.7 percent: government corruption and LGBTQIA+ rights. The acronym stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual and + rights. The + covers anyone else not already included in that list.

Other issues earning votes in the Democrats’ Bean Poll included roads, bridges and public transportation with 7.8 percent; Medicare and Social Security with 6.1 percent; wind, solar and public transportation and justice reform, which tied with 5.2 percent; and immigration reform with 3.4 percent.

The Canadian County Democrats meet in person at 7 p.m. on the second Monday of each month, except December, at the Yukon Police Department, 100 S. Ranchwood Boulevard. The meetings are also available on Zoom and streamed on Facebook’s @CanadianCoDems. For more information, phone 405-326-3600.
