YUKON, Okla. – Hundreds of adults, children and a baby goat stopped by the Canadian County Democrats’ booth to vote on the top issues of the day by dropping dried pinto beans into a wooden display with 11 topics separated by Plexiglas at El Reno’s Fried Onion Burger Day on May 1. (Actually only the people voted. The goat ate a few pre-vote beans.)  The group calls their display the Bean Counter.

Public education topped the Democrats’ opinion poll issues with 24 percent followed by Health Care with 13.7 percent, and Medicare and Social Security with 10.3 percent.

The public education slot filled up quickly, so volunteers added a box to catch the overflow beans and ensured that every bean vote was counted.

Women’s reproductive health with 9.2 percent nearly tied with government corruption at 9 percent, while LGBTQIA+ Rights earned 6.9 percent

The acronym LGBTQIA+ stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, Intersex and Asexual. The plus sign represents other identities not covered by the letters,

People at this event also chose veterans’ services with 6.3 percent and minimum wage increase with 6 percent, while climate change and gun violence tied with 5 percent.

Only 3 percent of bean poll voters picked immigration reform as a top issue.

“People love to share their opinions in our bean poll and encourage their kids to vote too,” Canadian County Democrats Secretary Shirley Burton said.

“We keep the issues general so everybody can choose topics on their minds no matter what side of an issue they’re on,” Vice Chair Tim O’Connor added.

The Canadian County Democrats meet at 7 p.m. on the second Monday of each month, except December, at Canadian Valley Technology Center, 1t 6505 E Highway 66 between El Reno and Yukon. The meetings are live streamed on Zoom. The next meeting will be on June 8.
