YUKON, Okla. – Louise Whitaker, Oklahoma chapter lead for Moms Demand Action, will speak to the Canadian County Democrats at 7 p.m. on Mon, May 1, at the Yukon Police Department, 100 S. Ranchwood Boulevard.

The date was changed for April only from the group’s regular meeting time on the second Monday of each month.

Moms Demand Action is a grassroots movement of Americans fighting for public safety measures to protect people from gun violence.

“Moms Demand Action just celebrated our 10-year anniversary,” Whitaker said. “We are not anti-gun. In fact, many of our members are gun owners.”

“We advocate for background checks and a waiting period for gun purchases,” she added.

A few of the main areas Moms Demand Action focus on are legislation to reduce gun violence, electing candidates who support sensible gun laws, city gun violence, missing and murdered indigenous women and suicide prevention.

We are also concerned about the impact of domestic violence on families and ways to reduce it and support for survivors and ways to help them find a voice to tell their stories,” Whitaker said.

A native of Oklahoma and member of the Wyandotte Nation, Whitaker was a librarian with the Pioneer Library System for 27 years.

She decided to join Moms Demand Action three years ago and works to reduce gun violence after hearing a survivor’s story of being threatened with a shotgun by her husband.

According to a U.S. News and World Report story dated January 30, 2023, the United States ranked fourth in the world after Columbia, Brazil and Mexico in the highest rate of deaths due to firearms in 2019.

The same source reports, “From 2014 to 2020, gun-related deaths in the U.S. rose 35%, according to nonpartisan data center USAFacts.
