CANADIAN COUNTY, Okla. – April 29 is the deadline for Democrats to submit applications for the Canadian County Democrats’ Robert “Bob” Burton Democratic Scholarship.

Democrats registered to vote in Canadian County have competed for the $500 scholarships for 16 years, which are awarded in memory of the organization’s former county vice chair for whom the awards are named.

Applicants must be enrolled at least half-time at any accredited state-funded college, university or career technology center in Oklahoma.

Students of all ages are eligible.

“The Canadian County Democrats have continued to award the Robert ‘Bob’ Burton Democratic Scholarships every year – even during the pandemic – as part of our community outreach efforts,” Shirley Burton, scholarship committee chair said. “We encourage Democratic students to apply and have found over the years that helping them reach their educational goals encourages them to vote and fully participate in the Democratic process in the future.”

Burton is the widow of Bob Burton, for whom the scholarships are named. She is secretary of the Canadian County Democrats.

Scholarship committee members include Burton, Laurie Hammons and Dennis Purifoy.

The scholarship paperwork is simple to complete. Applicants must also submit supporting documents, including a brief essay, answers to several questions, two letters of recommendation and a copy of their voter registration cards.

Late or incomplete applications cannot be accepted.

Students may request an application from Burton or complete and submit a Google form at https://bit.ly/2022CCDScholarship. Instructions on how to complete the Google form are available at https://bit.ly/2022CCDScholarshipInstr.
