YUKON, Okla. – El Reno resident Craig McVay, a 35-year veteran of Oklahoma public school service, will speak about his candidacy for Oklahoma state superintendent of public instruction at 7 p.m. on Monday, November 10, at the Yukon Police Department, 100 S. Ranchwood.

The public is invited to attend and find out more about McVay’s pledge to bring no-nonsense leadership to Oklahoma’s public education system with a restored focus on educational fundamentals and accountability.

“When Oklahoma’s schools rank 50th in the nation, it reflects chaotic leadership and misplaced priorities,” McVay said. “Improving public education isn’t a great mystery. We know what works: more instructional days, foundational literacy by third grade, bringing funding levels to a per student regional average and investing in quality, certified teachers.”

“No more BS,” McVay promised. “We’re going back to the basics: ABC’s and 123’s.”

McVay grew up in Yukon where “his earliest lessons came from classrooms, football fields, faith and family.”

During three and one-half decades as a successful Oklahoma educator, he served as teacher, coach, counselor, principal, superintendent and director of federal programs director, child nutrition, special education, transportation and athletics.

McVay retired in 2022 as superintendent of El Reno Schools with plans to use his decades of expertise to restore Oklahoma public schools to the fundamentals that make classrooms productive and educators successful.

“I’m an Oklahoman through and through,” McVay said. “This place is my home. I grew up here, went to school here and made a life for my family here. Oklahoma took great care of me, and it’s been the privilege of my life helping future generations do the same.”

McVay earned degrees from Seminole State College, the University of Central Oklahoma, and Southwestern Oklahoma State University.

He and his wife Darla have been married for 42 years and share two sons, two daughters-in-law and six grandchildren. In their spare time, they raise livestock on their ranch near El Reno.

McVay also trains mules, cooks at chuckwagon events and serves local nonprofits, including boards for youth and family services, Canadian County United Way, the El Reno Chamber, therapeutic riding programs and community heritage organizations.
