YUKON, Okla. – Carolyn Husmann, associate director for The Intervention & Crisis Advocacy Network, ICAN!, will be the Canadian County Democrats’ first speaker of the new year on Monday, January 13.

The CC Dems regularly meet from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. on the second Monday of each month, except December, in the training room at the Yukon Police Department, 100 S. Ranchwood.

The Democrats donate feminine hygiene supplies to community service programs through their Canadian County Period Project program and recently toured the ICAN! satellite office in El Reno.

“We were impressed with the awesome work ICAN! is doing in Canadian and Grady counties and asked Caroly Husmann to be our January 13 speaker,” Peggy Archibald, CC Dems Period Project coordinator, said. “We want our members to find out more about ICAN! and consider bringing feminine hygiene products or cash donations to the January meeting for women served by ICAN! and other community programs.”

ICAN! intervenes in times of crisis, advocates for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking, and networks with community partners to empower victims to become survivors, according to their website at https://www.icancrisisnetwork.com/.

In 2023, ICAN! provided essential services to 920 people.

The organization is the only Office of the Attorney General-certified domestic violence and sexual assault program with full-time staff and program houses in Canadian and Grady counties.

A group of women attending the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma in Chickasha launched ICAN! to provide emergency services and support for rape victims in February 1981. In May 1986, ICAN! received a grant to open a satellite office in El Reno to serve Canadian County victims. The El Reno staff rented or worked in donated space until they got a permanent home in August 1997, which is their program house today. In March 2021, ICAN secured additional funding for staff to serve as the onsite domestic violence service provider at the Canadian County Family Justice Center.
