YUKON, Okla. – The Canadian County Democrats will hold an interactive, free training session on Monday, October 14, to practice connecting with those who have opposing views or believe that politics has no impact on their lives.

The Democrats regularly meet on the second Monday of each month, except December when they have a holiday party, at the Yukon Police Department, 100 S. Ranchwood.

Chair Jody Harlan will lead “Conversations that Break Through” breakout sessions based on the national leadership development program Building Bridges for America.

Harlan participated in the training program in early October and wants to share it with the Canadian County Democrats and friends.

One of our active volunteers, Kathryn Koontz, asked for training that would help us practice effective communication with everyone from voters we meet when campaigning to family members arguing around the dinner table,” Harlan said. “It’s sometimes hard to know the best way to convey progressive political opinions to people who may disagree.”

“This training will give us new tools to actively listen to others and speak from the heart, so we build confidence, share our values and find common ground and better solutions together,” she added.

Harlan recently retired as communications director for an agency with more than 93,000 clients. She lists her job description as writer, earned master’s and bachelor’s degrees in English and taught that subject at the university level. Harlan has lived in Canadian County for more than 40 years with her husband Tim Wagner. Their son is Colin Wagner.
