Congressional District 3 chair to share National Democratic Party convention with Canadian County Dems Sept 09
YUKON, Okla. – Democratic Congressional District 3 Chair Sarah Carnes will be the featured speaker at the Canadian County Democrats’ meeting from 7-8:30 p.m. on Monday, August 9.
The Democrats regularly meet on the second Monday of each month, except December, at the Yukon Police Department, 100 S. Ranchwood.
Sarah Carnes will speak about her experiences representing Congressional District 3 as a floor delegate to the 2024 Democratic National Convention, ow to get involved in Vice President Kamala Harris and Tim Walz’s campaign and strategies for reengaging 122,000 inactive Democratic registered voters.
Carnes, who earned a master’s of education degree, is a lifelong Oklahoma Democrat, Cherokee Nation tribal citizen and member of the Oklahoma Education Association.
Carnes has lived in Canadian County for more than 20 years and has been served as a career public school teacher for more than 25 years.
She was elected a Congressional District 3 Delegate in the spring at the Oklahoma Democratic Party Convention in Ardmore.
In 2018, Sarah was a teacher candidate for House District 47 during the Oklahoma teacher walk-out. Running her own campaign gave Carnes the opportunity to build relationships with constituents in Yukon, Mustang, Tuttle and across the state.
She has volunteered for many local campaigns and loves knocking on doors, meeting voters and sharing information about candidates.
For the Canadian County Democrats, she has served as precinct chair, precinct vice chair, and affirmative action officer. She also volunteers for many community events for the Canadian County Democrats.
In 2023, Carnes was elected Congressional District 3 Chair, serving and volunteering to build Democratic action in 32 counties.
As CD 3 Chair, she has been in collaborative work with the CD 3 leadership team and the Oklahoma Democratic Central Committee, county chairs and their leadership teams while traveling to monthly meetings, speaking and engaging in community dialogue.
Some of the community organizations she has been a part of include University of Central Oklahoma American Association of University Women, Mustang Toastmasters, Delta Kappa Gamma-Beta Nu, National Art Education Association, Oklahoma Art Education Association, Oklahoma Alliance for Arts Education, Moms Demand Action and Defense of Democracy.

Her life has been committed to community service, building a lifelong network of community relationships, donating her time to community service projects, helping keep teachers in the classroom, listening to others and being a part of organizations that help others and their communities. Carnes has been recognized by peers with OAEA Elementary art teacher of the year, OAEA art educator of the year, NAEA elementary art educator for western region, OAAE educator art excellence award and most recently The Oklahoman’s Amazing Teacher Award.
Carnes loves to travel, meet new people, participate in creative activities and spend time with her husband and two daughters.
She has recently been working on ARTrageous, a community fine arts center in Yukon. with two creative, visionary and talented community women, Gwen Mesikep and Brittany Paige Pendleton.
